A little while later, a
policeman came and knocked the door. As we all stood up, he let another
fellow inside. He was all bruised and was writhing in pain. I could sense for sure he
must have been brutally kicked in by the boots. His dress was ragged
and was tithered everywhere. Seemed he's in here like his first time in the
jail.
Ofcourse it was even true for me but the way he was messed up and the other guy has been already there up several times meant he was a bit innocent.
Like I said I was klliing time and the whole truth was it wasn't flying the way it would.
Anyways it was really getting into me that I was in prison.
A few minute on, there was another knock. This time he called all of us out.
'Just keep following me.' so saying he opened another gate same - iron gate and let us in. There was a whiff of clean fresh air in the night. There were no lights on there.
I could see high walls and in the thick of the night it was really frightening. We walked some twenty yards and by then the new guy was given a whack by the escorting police.
'So why are you here?' he kept asking and the fellow didn't know how to answer. 'So it is your first time and now on you will become regular, you understand?'
And another whack on his back.
We reach a circular building and from there he calls another man in uniform for a key and they open it and lead us to the last of the cells. I could see as I passed by some saying 'Welcome here buddy' and some cooing 'good to see you' ...
As we reach the last of the cells, it spoke the British legacy even walls and the gates did have an accent, unfortunately all inmates were Indians today.
He opened it and a chief of prison inmates of that cell came to take some notes and they exchanged glances and pushed us in.
It was a pretty big hall and people were stranded as they wanted some space for themselves. I cocoon myself to the side and take a seat at the corner. To my right is an open toilet, and directly opposite is a plate a bigger one used to cover big tanks, full of rice and a small vessel with sambar.
There were noises going on after our arrival. I took the corner and thought I will take rest. Just then as I was about to lie, I heard a loud shout.
'You there it is already reserved.' I looked at the direction form where I heard. There was one big man ruffian, big stature and all looking devilish. I mean no offence nevertheless he looked terrifying.
Then sensing my uneasiness another guy called me. With prayers unto God and little shiver down my spine I move towards him.
'Don't be afraid, we are also human. You seem to be of a good lineage. Come lets chat.'
That was a bit comforting. I take a seat in the small blanket made mat.
He looked at me and said 'Don't worry, you are here because of fate, you shall overcome.' and added with a questioning look 'Where are you from?'
